Why So Curious? Screenplay– By Joseph Morin

FADE IN:

INT. A HALLWAY. NIGHT

In a hallway, there is a doorway against the wall. JUSTIN
walks by the doorway carrying a crowbar. He wears a grey
jumpsuit. From behind the doorway, an electric drill is
heard. Justin continues past the door. A door off-screen
opens and shuts. A moment later, the same sound is heard. The
drilling continues. Justin walks past the room again, now
emptyhanded. He knocks on the door. JOE opens the door
holding the drill. He also wears a jumpsuit.

JOE
Yeah?

JUSTIN
Couldn’t help but hear ya drilin’ in there.

JOE
And?

JUSTIN
I just wanted to know what you’re working on.

JOE
Why so curious?

JUSTIN
Well, I didn’t even know you had a drill, for one.

JOE
It’s new.

JUSTIN

Ah…

Awkward silence.

JUSTIN (CONT’D)
Well, I’ll leave you to it. Whatever you’re doing.

JOE
Bye.

Joe slams the door shut in Justin’s face. Justin continues
OS. As he leaves, he hears the muffled sounds of Joe shouting
at something quietly. It nearly sounds like he’s in an
argument. Justin walks back in carrying a pair of cutters. He stops at
the door and knocks.

JOE (CONT’D)
What now?

JUSTIN
Is everything OK in there, pal?

JOE
Why so curious?

JUSTIN
I thought I heard you yelling at someone.

JOE
And that would be your business because?

JUSTIN
I only wanted to check in is all. Sounded like it was getting kinda heated.

JOE
If you must know, I was yelling to myself.

JUSTIN
Oh yeah?

JOE
This thing I’m working on in here: it’s getting to be quite frustrating.

JUSTIN
Take a a break maybe?

JOE
No can do. It’s time sensitive.

JUSTIN
Gotcha. I’ll stay out of your hair then.

JOE
Thank you.

Justin continues off screen. Joe slams the door. Like before,
the sound of a door OS is heard opening and closing. A moment
later the same door opens and closes again. Justin walks past
the door. The soft yelling continues. Justin walks by the door again, this time carrying a rope. He stops at the door, debating whether or not to knock. He then walks past.

Suddenly, a woman’s scream is heard from inside. Justin rushes back to the door and knocks frantically. Joe calmly opens the door, brandishing a huge knife with red liquid on it. He then slowly begins wiping it off with a rag.
Justin looks unnerved.

JUSTIN
Hi again. I said I wasn’t going to bother you, but…

JOE
No, no, my friend. This one is fair.

JUSTIN
Yeah?

JOE
It was the woman screaming right?

JUSTIN
Well, now that you mention it…

JOE
I was watching a movie.

JUSTIN
I don’t hear it now.

JOE
I shut it off, it was too scary for my tastes.

JUSTIN
Hmm. May I ask what the knife’s for?

JOE
Why so curious?

Joe stares at him blankly, but intensely. Justin stares back
for a moment before beginning to laugh hysterically. His
laugh soon peters out.

JUSTIN
I think I’ll be on my way now.

JOE
Suit yourself.

Joe goes back inside and shuts the door. Justin continues
past into the adjacent room.

INT. A DARKLY LIT ROOM. NIGHT.

Justin enters.

JUSTIN
Sorry to keep coming and going like this, but my friend over there keeps grabbing my attention. I’m no doctor, but I’m nearly certain he’s mentally ill.

It is revealed that he is talking to Batman, tied up to a
chair. Justin goes over to a table and begins wiping off his
face with a rag.

BATMAN
What are you planning, Joker?

Justin stands revealed in full Joker makeup. He picks up a
crowbar and begins laughing.

JUSTIN
Why so curious?

EXT. A GOTHIC LOOKING BUILDING. NIGHT.

Large metal gates line the perimeter of a scary looking
building. At the entrance to these gates, a plaque reads
“Arkham Asylum”

Joe's passion for film and entertainment began at 7 years old when his younger brother demanded to watch Duel of the Fates every day for weeks (on DVD). Joe admired the sequence so much, he decided to dedicate his life to film-making and storytelling. He has a degree in Cinema and Media Studies from York University. Joe loves DC superheroes (especially Superman), the first six Star Wars movies, and arguing about media with anyone who will listen.
